Hamburger Kunsthalle «L’œuvre d’art d’Aby Warburg et les œuvres d’art des artistes»

Georges Adéagbo's installation for the Hamburger Kunsthalle is dedicated to Aby Warburg. Rather than as a scholar, known for revolutionizing methods of art-history, Adéagbo presents him as an artist. Both Warburg and Adéagbo observe images, ideas and myths constantly on the move and deny that they are static or owned by or attached to one culture. As a consequence, the space at Hamburger Kunsthalle vibrates with resonances between the two who live a century apart.

Hamburg Ernst Barlach Haus «A l’école de Ernest Barlach, le sculpteur»

To mark his 80th birthday the Ernst Barlach Haus invited Georges Adéagbo to actively incorporate the collection of the Ernst Barlach drawings and sculptures into an installation. He commissioned painted and sculptural ‘translations’ from artisans in Benin.

KINDL, Berlin – «La Lumière que fait le bonheur»

For his most extensive solo exhibition to date, Adéagbo is developing an installation at the KINDL that will occupy the entire exhibition space, drawing on elements from central works such as Tout de moi à tous (2007) and Une espace avec le monde (2007) and updating them with found objects from Neukölln and the KINDL archives.

Smithsonian Museum of African Art, Washington DC “Create to Free Yourselves: Abraham Lincoln and the history of Freeing Slaves in America”

Adéagbo iuxtaposes objects and documents that show the complexity of the process of the abolition of slavery. They include Abraham Lincoln’s writing, portraits of Frederick Douglass and John Brown all produced in Benin.

Documenta 11 – «L'explorateur et les explorateurs devant l'histoire de l'exploration, le théâtre du monde»..!

Documenta 11, Kassel - 2002 Already in 2001, curator Okwui Enwezor invited Georges Adéagbo to compose a new assemblage for platform 5 of his Documenta 11. Adéagbo collected and commissioned in Benin and Niger. The work was acquired 2003 by Kasper Koenig for the collection of the Museum Ludwig Cologne.
