The 59th Carnegie International Pittsburgh "If the Word We"
May 1st 2026 - January 3rd 2027
Georges Adéagbo created a new version of his legendary work Le Socialisme Africain (2001), originally composed for Okwui Enwezor’s exhibition The Short Century, which opened at Villa Stuck, Munich, in 2001. The installation was modified for each subsequent venue - Gropius Bau, Berlin; MCA, Chicago; P.S.1 MoMA, New York - and finally for Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, in 2004 (not part of Enwezor’s tour but presented as Adéagbo’s solo show). For the Pittsburgh version, Adéagbo commissioned seventeen new portraits of African statesmen who had guided their countries to independence.
